Austin FC Outlook

After a six-week break from Open Cup action, Austin gears up for the next step in its journey to claim the first piece of major silverware in the Club’s short history. ATXFC reached the Quarterfinal Round – its best performance yet in this tournament – via home wins over a pair of in-state opponents back in May.

MLS All-Star Brandon Vazquez has been the team’s offensive talisman in Open Cup play so far. He tallied two goals and an assist in a 3-2 comeback win over El Paso Locomotive FC in the Round of 32 and added another goal in a 3-1 triumph over Houston in the Round of 16.

While Austin has never won in San Jose, it also hasn’t lost there since 2021, earning a draw at PayPal Park on each of its last three visits. Advancing past the Earthquakes would mean facing either Minnesota away or Chicago at home in the Semifinal Round in mid-September.

San Jose Earthquakes Outlook

San Jose had a tough start to 2025. The team lost 6 of its first 10 matches, but since the start of May has lost only once in 13 matches. That run includes Open Cup victories over Sacramento Republic FC and Portland Timbers. Jack Skahan provided the winner in the 116th minute of the Round of 16 meeting with Portland.

The team’s attack has clicked under Head Coach Bruce Arena, producing 41 goals in 21 league matches – good for second-most in MLS. The Quakes have failed to score in only two matches this season, led by a dangerous front three of Chicho Arango (10 goals), Josef Martínez (eight goals), and Cristian Espinoza (11 assists).

It’s at the other end of the pitch where San Jose has looked vulnerable at times. Only Kansas City and Montréal have allowed more goals at home than the Earthquakes in MLS play this season, a trend the Verde & Black will aim to capitalize on this Tuesday night.
