Austin FC Outlook
Austin FC defeated Houston Dynamo FC 3-1 Wednesday night in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, advancing to the tournament’s Quarterfinal Round. Brandon Vazquez opened the scoring, netting his third goal of the tournament and fifth in the team’s last five (5) matches. Osman Bukari ignited the team in the second half, scoring from the penalty spot and setting up Ilie Sánchez with a brilliant assist.
Austin will now re-focus on league play, where its last two results were a pair of draws against Atlanta and Vancouver. The match in Minnesota is the team’s seventh match out of nine total in May. Minnesota made the trip to Austin earlier this month for the first game of that busy stretch and earned a win at Q2 Stadium, which ATXFC will be eager to avenge this weekend.
After winning away at Minnesota in each of the last two seasons, ATXFC will look toward securing a third consecutive victory at Allianz Field and a third road win of 2025 after defeating LAFC and St. Louis earlier in the season.
Minnesota United FC Outlook
Minnesota United FC narrowly beat St. Louis City SC 3-2 on Wednesday night in Open Cup action, joining Austin in the tournament quarterfinals. Anthony Markanich scored in the 85th and 88th minutes to flip a loss to a win for the Loons.
MNUFC are currently sitting in second place in the Western Conference with a record of 7-3-4. Minnesota’s most recent MLS match was also at home against St. Louis, a 3-0 result last Saturday night. Their form during a busy month of May has been excellent, winning three out of four league matches and two U.S. Open Cup games.
Minnesota currently leads the conference in set-piece scoring and has conceded the fewest goals of any team in the West. Austin’s focus Saturday night will be on finding a way through the Loons’ stingy defense while preventing the Loons from capitalizing on any set-piece opportunities that come their way.
