Austin FC Outlook

Austin FC enters this weekend’s match in good form. The Verde & Black have a 3-1-1 league record since the start of June and advanced to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals with a shootout win over San Jose Earthquakes two weeks ago.

Last time out, ATXFC won 2-1 against LA Galaxy on July 16. Myrto Uzuni put in a man of the match performance, scoring one goal himself and setting up Owen Wolff for the other. MLS All-Star Brad Stuver made an important save late to preserve the victory and ensure the team completed a season sweep of the Galaxy.

Those points helped Austin climb to 8th place in the MLS Western Conference standings, with either one or two games in hand on all the teams around them. Austin will now make its second-ever visit to D.C. United. Back in 2022, the Verde & Black pulled off an incredible comeback at Audi Field, winning 3-2 despite trailing 2-0 entering the 80th minute. ATXFC also won the only meeting between the two sides at Q2 Stadium, a 3-0 result toward the end of the 2023 season.

Austin will look to claim a second consecutive road win ahead of a two-week break in action.

D.C. United Outlook

D.C. United are coming off a 2-1 loss against Columbus Crew last Saturday night at Lower.com Field. Christian Benteke scored United’s lone goal - his seventh of the season - early in the second half to tie the match. Notably, defender Aaron Herrera was shown a second yellow in the 89th minute and will miss the match against Austin.

D.C. United are currently in 14th place in the Eastern Conference, with an overall record of 4-13-7. The Black & Red have struggled recently with four defeats in their last five matches, but they did get an impressive away result against current Supporters’ Shield leaders FC Cincinnati at the end of May, winning 2-1 at TQL Stadium.

Austin will need to get past Luis Barraza in the United net, a former teammate of Stuver’s. Barraza has tallied a total of 63 saves in his last 17 appearances.
