Austin FC Outlook
Austin dropped Game 1 in LA on Wednesday night 2-1 but gave a good account of themselves throughout the match. Neither member of LAFC’s dynamic attacking duo of Son Heung-Min and Denis Bouanga registered a goal contribution, and both LAFC goals came with the help of unfortunate deflections off an Austin player.
Jon Gallagher grabbed ATXFC’s goal in the 63rd minute off a composed assist from Owen Wolff. The strike moved Gallagher’s career total in Verde & Black to 14, good for third-most on Austin’s all-time scoring list.
All three meetings between Austin and LAFC this season have been decided by a one-goal margin. The gameplan should be similar on Sunday night as Austin knows only a win will extend its season. The Verde & Black will look to use Q2 Stadium’s atmosphere to their advantage to frustrate the LA attack and earn a third victory this season against the California club.
LAFC Outlook
LAFC carries the series lead into Game 2 and will have their eyes on avoiding a Game 3 back at BMO Stadium, which would take place on Saturday, November 8 if Austin wins on Sunday.
Steve Cherundolo’s side fared well on their travels during the regular season, collecting 25 points from 17 away games and losing only four times – though one of those losses came at Q2 Stadium on October 12.
Though he didn’t score or assist, Son still picked up Player of the Match honors for Game 1. The South Korean superstar will remain the focal point of the LAFC attack and Austin’s defense will once again need to be keyed in on his movements at all times to keep him off the scoresheet.
