Austin FC Outlook
Austin’s last step in the Open Cup was a memorable one as the Club defeated San Jose Earthquakes in penalties on July 8, coming back from a goal down in both regulation and extra time. Brad Stuver stopped two San Jose attempts in the shootout after making nine saves during the match.
That resilient team performance set up this Wednesday night’s opportunity in Minnesota. The Verde & Black know that victory would mean taking part in their first-ever cup final, a final which Austin would host at Q2 Stadium in two weeks’ time.
ATXFC picked up points from each of its last three league visits to Allianz Field. A 4-1 win in 2023 and a 1-0 result in 2024 were followed by a 1-1 draw in May of this current campaign. Dating back to Austin’s quarterfinal triumph in San Jose, the team has won 4 of its last 6 away matches across all competitions.
Minnesota United FC Outlook
Minnesota enters Wednesday’s cup clash in fine form, with 10 points from its last four league matches. The Loons sit second in the MLS Western Conference and grabbed a statement 3-1 win at leaders San Diego FC last time out, closing the gap between the sides to two points.
To reach the Open Cup semifinals, MNUFC defeated Louisville City FC on the road before beating St. Louis and Chicago at home. Top scorer Tani Oluwaseyi may have departed for Villarreal in the summer window, but Minnesota can still hurt opponents in a variety of ways.
Minnesota averages just 38.9 percent possession in MLS matches, the lowest of any side in the league. Their ability to remain compact defensively – they allow just 1.1 goals per match – and quickly create opportunities in transition makes them dangerous. The Verde & Black will also need to be mindful of the threat MNUFC poses on set pieces, from which they’ve scored 19 league goals in 2025.
There will be an MLS All-Star goalkeeper at both ends of the pitch as the Loons’ Dayne St. Clair and Stuver were both selected this season.
