Austin FC Outlook
Austin once again showed the resilience that has been the team’s cornerstone this season during its 2-1 away win at Minnesota in the Open Cup Semifinal Round on September 17. Despite conceding an equalizer which forced the match to extra time, the Verde & Black had more fight late in the match which translated to a 120th-minute winner by CJ Fodrey.
Every player on Head Coach Nico Estévez’s roster made important contributions en route to the Open Cup Final, helping the group consistently overcome adversity round after round. Austin’s cup run featured four goals scored when trailing, the latest and second-latest goals in Club history, the Club’s second-ever penalty shootout win, and two away victories.
Those performances earned ATXFC the chance to host the final at Q2 Stadium, where they have lost only 2 of 17 home matches in all competitions in 2025. The team won its two most recent fixtures there in league play – 3-1 over San Jose and 2-1 over Seattle – and will look to once again capitalize on the boost it gets from playing in front of its supporters.
Jon Gallagher and Osman Bukari scored in Austin’s most recent meeting against Nashville, a 2-0 victory in Tennessee last August. Nashville has only visited the Texas capital once previously which resulted in a 1-1 draw in September 2022.
Nashville SC Outlook
Nashville enters Wednesday’s final off the back of clinching a place in the MLS Cup Playoffs Saturday night. Head Coach B.J. Callaghan’s side accomplished that feat with a 3-1 home win over 10-man Houston Dynamo FC. Key attackers Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar were both on the scoresheet.
To reach the Open Cup Final, Nashville progressed past Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at GEODIS Park and Orlando City SC at Inter&Co Stadium in the early rounds. Their quarterfinal and semifinal victories both came at home – a 5-2 result over D.C. United in July and an impressive 3-1 win over Supporters’ Shield leaders Philadelphia Union two weeks ago.
Nashville is a balanced group, ranking in the top 10 in MLS in both goals per match (1.7) and goals conceded per match (1.2). Surridge’s tally of 22 trails only Lionel Messi and Denis Bouanga in the league’s Golden Boot race. 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar has 16 goals and 11 assists to his name.
