Austin FC Outlook
Austin FC is set for its second match in this season’s U.S. Open Cup having defeated El Paso Locomotive FC 3-2 back on May 7 to reach this round. Brandon Vazquez (two goals, one assist) and Owen Wolff (two assists) were both key figures in helping ATXFC erase an early deficit and earn a comeback victory.
Austin now needs to win four further matches to lift American soccer’s most historic prize and earn an automatic berth in next season’s Concacaf Champions Cup. The Club has four wins and four losses in the eight single elimination matches it has previously played in cup competitions.
If Austin were to defeat Houston on Wednesday night, it would reach the Open Cup Quarterfinal Round for the first time in Club history. That round would take place on either July 8 or 9 against a to-be-determined opponent.
Houston Dynamo FC Outlook
After a slow start to the season, Houston have rounded into form this month, winning three of their last four matches. One of those wins was against Phoenix Rising FC in the previous round of the Open Cup. Though they needed extra time to do it, a goal from Jack McGlynn helped Houston break the deadlock and run out to a 4-1 victory.
McGlynn was once again on the scoresheet as the Dynamo defeated Dallas last Saturday night in league play, the second of two consecutive 2-0 results. Keeping the talented young American midfielder quiet will be an area of focus for Austin on Wednesday.
Though ATXFC has won 7 of 12 all-time meetings vs. Houston, the Dynamo have claimed the last two, including their first-ever win at Q2 Stadium last September. The Verde & Black will be hungry to re-establish dominance on home turf and return to winning ways against their rivals.
