This AAPI Heritage Month, Austin FC highlights the Taniguchi Japanese Garden at Zilker Botanical Garden. It’s a space built with care that was given to the city as a lasting gift.
At seventy years old, Isamu Taniguchi transformed a rugged hillside into a place of stillness. Working without a contract or salary, and guided by a single sketch, he spent 18 months shaping three acres into what would become one of Austin’s most meaningful spaces. Even the ponds carry intention, spelling “AUSTIN" as a tribute to the city.
Today, the Taniguchi Japanese Garden stands as a reflection of craft and resilience, and as one of the many places that continue to shape Austin’s identity since it opened to the public in 1969.
