Austin FC defeated Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on Sunday evening at BC Place. Austin is now unbeaten in its last six MLS matches and has won three consecutive road games, a run which has taken the team within one game of the playoff line.
Austin opened the scoring via a clinical counterattack in the 28th minute. Facundo Torres found Christian Ramirez with a cross, and the striker made no mistake. Vancouver missed a chance to equalize before halftime when Ryan Gauld hit a penalty kick off the crossbar, but got the tying goal on the other side of the break through Brian White.
Ramirez struck again though, smashing a finish into the roof of the net to restore the lead with his team-best seventh goal of the season. Austin effectively saw out the final half hour to claim a vital three points in its hunt for the postseason.
