Austin FC fell in a 4-3 defeat against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday night at Q2 Stadium.

The Red Bulls took the lead in the 14th-minute thanks to Serge Ngoma. Dru Yearwood doubled the advantage 12 minutes later with a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area. Sebastián Driussi brought Austin back into the match just before halftime with a stunning volley, which went through a crowd of players untouched and nestled inside the far post.

Cameron Harper reestablished New York’s two-goal cushion in the 51st-minute, and the Verde & Black were unlucky not to immediately respond as Maxi Urruti’s shot ricocheted off the post. Tom Barlow recorded the Red Bulls’ fourth goal in the 65th-minute before Driussi found the net once again, this time on an incredible swerving strike from 30 yards out. The Argentine’s pair of goals were his 12th and 13th of the season, moving him into a tie atop the MLS goal-scoring charts.

The Verde & Black pulled within one with nine minutes remaining. Moments after making his debut as a substitute, winger Washington Corozo brilliantly set up Ethan Finlay with a bicycle kick assist. Despite piling on the pressure late though, Austin couldn’t quite find an equalizing goal.

THREE THINGS

  • DRIUSSI DOES IT: Sebastián Driussi’s two goals and one assist bring his season tally for goal contributions to 20, most of any player in MLS.
  • WELCOME WASHINGTON: Austin’s newest player, winger Washington Corozo, made his debut for the Verde & Black and picked up a spectacular assist to mark the milestone.
  • HOME COOKING: Four of Austin’s next six matches are at Q2 Stadium.
