Austin FC fell 2-0 against Chicago Fire FC on Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium, exiting the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 16.
Austin nearly took the lead in the 2nd minute when Emiliano Rigoni shot a free kick just wide of the post, and the visitors then ended up opening the scoring after 27 minutes. Fire defender Rafael Czichos jumped the highest of everyone in a crowded penalty area to head home a cross from Brian Gutierrez.
The Verde & Black pushed forward in search of an equalizer in the second half. Chicago goalkeeper Spencer Richey was called into action on a few occasions, but ultimately Austin were unable to tie the match, and Chicago added a second goal to seal the result in the 77th minute.
