Austin FC Outlook

As the race for the MLS Cup Playoff places begins to heat up, Austin FC finds itself in its best run of form in the 2023 season. No team in the league has scored more goals (11) or picked up more points (10) than Head Coach Josh Wolff’s side since June 21, a run which has lifted the Verde & Black from 12th to 5th place in the Western Conference.

Since returning from injury in late May, talisman Sebastián Driussi has provided a big boost, recording four goals and two assists in seven games. The Argentine Designated Player was at his brilliant best against Minnesota, tallying a pair of goals and assisting another to go with five total chances created. That performance made him the first player in Austin FC history to reach 50 goal contributions across all competitions for the Club.

Ethan Finlay also hit an important milestone on Saturday by becoming just the 17th player in league history to reach 300 career regular season games played, and marked the occasion with an excellent assist to Driussi for the Verde’s third goal.

After the Vancouver match, Austin will have less than 72 hours to prepare for a home match on July 15 vs. Sporting KC, its final game before a month-long pause in MLS play brought about by the inaugural Leagues Cup. Results in this week's matches could see ATXFC climb as high as third place in the West by Sunday.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Outlook

Vancouver has been tricky to beat at BC Place this season, losing only twice in 11 contests on home turf. However, one of those losses came last Saturday, as rivals Seattle came from behind on two occasions to snatch a 3-2 victory.

The Whitecaps find themselves in ninth in a crowded Western Conference. They’ve been one of the more exciting teams in the league to watch this season, scoring 32 goals - second only to St. Louis in the West. Ryan Gauld continues to impress for Head Coach Vanni Sartini’s team, chipping in five goals and five assists in 2023. Brian White paces the team from a scoring standpoint with seven goals.

Vancouver is set to be without defender Mathias Laborda (red card suspension), midfielder Julian Gressel (international duty), and defender Javain Brown (international duty) for Wednesday’s clash against Austin.
