Austin FC Outlook
Though Austin FC exited Leagues Cup at the quarterfinal stage on Wednesday night, the group can take heart from a strong collective effort against Toluca, one of the top sides in Concacaf. The Verde & Black will now regroup and prepare for the final 13 matches of the regular season with their eyes on pushing toward the playoff places.
Austin won in the Pacific Northwest just over a week ago, taking a 2-1 victory over the Timbers’ archrivals Seattle. They’ll look to repeat the trick on Saturday night at an away ground where the Club earned positive results on 2 of its last 3 visits.
The match in Portland will be Austin’s ninth and final game in August, making it one of the busiest months in Club history. The entire squad has contributed in a meaningful way during that stretch, and the Verde & Black will look to wrap up the month on a high note. The team will finally have a full week of rest between matches, with its next fixture at home next Saturday against San Jose.
Portland Timbers Outlook
The Timbers are under new management in the second half of the season. The club announced Spaniard Martà Cifuentes as its new head coach back on July 21, with Jack Cassidy taking interim charge until Cifuentes received his visa and managed his first game from the touchline on August 13. In his first four games at the helm, the Timbers have won twice, drawn once, and lost once.
With 13 games left in the regular season, Portland finds itself in the thick of the playoff battle. The Timbers are in ninth place and level on points with the teams in seventh, eighth, and tenth, right on the postseason cutline. They have been a strong side this year when playing at Providence Park, posting a 6-2-2 record on home turf.
DP Norwegian striker Kristoffer Velde has been a spark up front, contributing five goals and nine assists. At the other end of the pitch, James Pantemis is the only goalkeeper in the league with more saves than Brad Stuver, meaning a battle between two of MLS’ top shot-stoppers could be in store.
