Austin FC Outlook
Austin FC’s match against Minnesota will be its eighth in a 26-day span, one of the busiest periods in the Club’s short history. Prior to a disappointing defeat at Houston last time out, the Verde & Black won back-to-back league matches, and have a big opportunity to add more points to their tally with a pair of home games this week.
In fact, four of Austin’s next five matches will be played at Q2 Stadium. After Minnesota on Wednesday night, Josh Wolff’s side will host Real Salt Lake on Saturday, followed by crucial Copa Tejas matches against Dallas and Houston in late June. With more time between games in the weeks to come, it’s sure to be a key part of the season for Austin FC.
As the team enters that key run, it will hope for the goal-scoring form of Gyasi Zardes to continue. The U.S. international forward has scored headers in three consecutive MLS games. The first two were game-winners against Seattle and Toronto, and the third made him only the 13th player in league history to reach 100 career regular season goals.
Minnesota United FC Outlook
It’s been a roller coaster of a season so far for the Loons. Minnesota went unbeaten through its first five matches of the season, picking up 11 points between February 25 and April 1. That was followed by a run of five losses in their next six games though, until the team earned back-to-back 1-0 wins over Houston and Portland earlier this month.
The Loons have fared better on their travels than they have at home, with their four away victories and 12 away points both ranking best in MLS to this point in the season. Bongokuhle Hlongwane has been the team’s bright spot in attack, with his four goals - including a late winner away against the Timbers - the most among Minnesota players.
Matches between Austin and Minnesota tend to be tight. Though none of the five prior meetings have been draws, four of the five have been decided by a one-goal margin, and three of those four were by a 1-0 scoreline.
