Austin FC Outlook

After its match vs. Montréal, Austin FC faces a packed run of fixtures that includes a two-legged Concacaf Champions League tie on March 7 and 14 vs. Violette AC of Haiti, and back-to-back away matches in league play at Real Salt Lake (March 11) and Houston Dynamo FC (March 18).

That makes picking up a positive result on Saturday all the more important. The Verde & Black got a momentum-building victory in Montréal last season, winning 1-0 courtesy of a Maxi Urruti goal despite playing the entire second half with 10 men.

That performance in mid-June was the start of a four-match unbeaten streak away, and a seven-match unbeaten streak overall.

"It was one of the season-defining moments for us," said Austin FC defender Jon Gallagher of last season's Montréal match, in which he assisted Urruti for the winner. "Being a man down at halftime, getting together, it was a test of the character and maturity of the group. It was a big moment for us and set us on that run of results."

CF Montréal Outlook

Montréal began its 2023 season with a 2-0 defeat away at Inter Miami CF, and will arrive at Q2 Stadium hungry to get its first goals and first points of the new campaign.

The Canadian club underwent a coaching change during the offseason, hiring former D.C. United boss HernĂ¡n Losada as its head coach. Losada has a reputation for setting up his teams to play up-tempo attacking soccer, and is tasked with helping MontrĂ©al finish among the top teams in the Eastern Conference once again despite the departure of multiple key players.

While Djordje Mihailovic, Kei Kamara, and Ismaël Koné helped Montréal finish third in the Supporters’ Shield standings in 2022, all three left the club in the offseason. There’s still plenty of talent and experience in the squad though, including former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Waynama, Canadian international defender Kamal Miller, and defender Aaron Herrera - who made over 130 appearances for Real Salt Lake.
