Austin opened its Leagues Cup 2026 campaign on Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Club Tijuana at home. In the 16th minute, Myrto Uzuni found Joseph Rosales who opened the scoring for the Verde & Black and ignited the crowd at Q2 Stadium. Two minutes into first-half extra time, Jon Gallagher found the back of the net and gave Austin the two-goal lead that they would hold for the remainder of the match.Â
The victory marked Austin’s third consecutive win against LIGA MX opposition. The squad now looks to build on their current momentum in a Sunday night Leagues Cup showdown against Puebla. Austin will look towards Brad Stuver to continue his stellar goalkeeping and earn consecutive clean sheets to begin the tournament.
This match is the second of three Phase one matches that will determine if Austin will represent one of the four MLS spots in the Knockout Round Bracket. Austin FC is currently one of 10 MLS teams who have earned 3 points through their first match.Â
Puebla Outlook
Puebla looks to earn their first victory of Leagues Cup 2026 following a Thursday night defeat to Portland Timbers. The team’s defense will look to bounce back in a big way after allowing 5 goals including multi-goal performances from Ariel Lassiter and Cole Bassett of Portland.Â
Newly appointed Head Coach Gerardo Espinoza looks to bring the squad back to the knockout round of the Leagues Cup after a quarterfinal appearance in 2025. After securing wins in the group stage over New York City FC and Columbus Crew, Puebla earned a spot in the knockout stage for the first time in club history. They would fall to Seattle Sounders FC in penalties to end their 2025 run.
Puebla will need a victory on Sunday for a chance to climb up to the top 4 in the LIGA MX Leagues Cup standings. Their final group stage match is against San Diego FC and will take place on Wednesday, August 12.
