As we celebrate Women’s History Month, Austin FC is proud to spotlight Chateau Bellevue, a landmark that stands at the center of women-led progress in our city.

Built in 1874 by Harvey and Catherine North, the historic mansion has been home to the Austin Woman’s Club since 1929. For more than 150 years, the Club has championed educational, civic, cultural, and social initiatives that improve opportunities and conditions for women across Austin.

After the passage of the 19th Amendment, women in Austin embraced new freedoms by engaging in politics and forming social clubs that would help shape the city’s future. Former Austin Women’s Club President and current member Anne Yeakel has shared that more than 100 women from various clubs united to purchase Chateau Bellevue, a remarkable feat given the purchase took place amid The Great Depression.

Since making Chateau Bellevue its headquarters, The Austin Woman’s Club has preserved the building’s architectural and historical heritage while expanding its mission of service. Through educational programs, civic engagement, and social initiatives, the organization continues to serve and encourage women to engage in philanthropic services and lead with purpose.

Over the decades, the Chateau has also welcomed many of Austin’s notable figures. Club member Sandy Cangelosi has reflected on the gatherings held inside, including visits from Mr. and Mrs. Percy Pennybacker, Zachary Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Don Moody, and Loomis Slaughter, among others. Today, the historic space also serves as a wedding venue, welcoming new memories within its storied walls.

Austin FC is proud to celebrate a place that is not only rooted in our city, but in action, service, and resilience. Chateau Bellevue is a historic home where leadership lives on.
