Austin FC to Face 7-Time Liga MX Champion Club Tigres UANL in Friendly Match at Q2 Stadium

Austin FC welcomes its first international opponent in Club history

Austin, Texas –

Austin FC announced today it will play host to seven-time Liga MX Champions and 2020 CONCACAF Champions League winner Club Tigres UANL in an international friendly on Tuesday, July 13, starting at 8:00pm CDT at Q2 Stadium.

Claudio Reyna. “Tigres is a successful Liga MX Club that will bring a notable roster for their preseason in the U.S. It will be a great experience for fans and for our players. We look forward to hosting Tigres at Q2 Stadium.”

Founded in 1960, Club de Fútbol Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, is one (1) of Mexico’s most storied clubs, having won one (1) CONCACAF Champions League title (2020), seven (7) Liga MX titles, three (3) Copa MX titles, three (3) Campeón de Campeones tournaments, and two (2) InterLiga titles. Tigres was also a runner-up in the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar, falling 0-1 against Bayern Munich.

Club Tigres features a prominent attacking lineup led by French striker and all-time Club top scorer André-Pierre Gignac, French midfielder and FIFA 2018 World Cup winner Florian Thauvin, Uruguayan striker Nicolás López and Paraguayan forward Carlos González. Tigres’ squad also includes defenders Luis Rodríguez and Carlos Salcedo, who were recently called up to the Mexico National Team for the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League.

Former Mexico Men’s National Team Head Coach Miguel Herrera recently joined the Nuevo León side  after a successful stint with Club América, where he won (2) two Liga MX titles, one (1) Copa MX, and one (1) Campeón de Campeones title. At the national team level, Herrera coached the Mexican National Team to the Round of 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and won a CONCACAF Gold Cup (2015).

Tigres will play two (2) additional matches against fellow Liga MX opponents prior to their friendly against Austin FC. On July 7, Tigres will face Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas, followed by a July 10 matchup against Club América at San Antonio’s Alamodome.
