First half goals from Rodney Redes and Maxi Urruti helped Austin FC pick up a 2-0 win over New Mexico United in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday night. The victory in the Club’s first-ever U.S. Open Cup home match sees Austin advance to the tournament’s Round of 16.

Redes gave Austin the lead with 24 minutes on the clock. The Paraguayan beat his marker to the near post on a corner kick before heading Emiliano Rigoni’s delivery across the face of goal and in. The Verde & Black then doubled their lead 12 minutes later on a well-executed team move.

Rigoni picked up the ball in midfield and drove at the defense before playing Adam Lundkvist down the left flank. Lundkvist hit a low cross which Urruti calmly tucked away from six (6) yards out.

The hosts made a number of substitutions throughout the second half to keep legs fresh during a busy run of games. Center back Aleksandar Radovanović came on at the start of the second half for his Austin FC debut, and played a role in the team preserving its shutout until the final whistle.

Austin will learn the opponent and location for its U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 match in Thursday’s draw conducted by U.S. Soccer. The Round of 16 match will take place on either Tuesday, May 23 or Wednesday, May 24.
