State of Play

ATXFC II battled back to defeat Tacoma Defiance 2-1 on Friday, netting both goals in the final 10 minutes of match play.  Alonso Ramírez found the equalizer for ATXFC II in the 84th-minute on a penalty kick after a handball in the box by the Defiance defense. With seconds remaining in stoppage time, Ramírez hit a powerful long-range shot that Tacoma’s goalkeeper couldn’t secure, resulting in the ball bouncing free in the box and Christo Vela rebounding home to give ATXFC II three points. ATXFC II finished the match with 18 shots compared to Tacoma’s two and had possession for 60 percent of the match.

The result was the latest in an already impressive string of come-from-behind performances by ATXFC II. Head Coach Brett Uttley’s side has conceded the first goal in all three of its matches so far but has come back to earn points on all three occasions, including two wins.

The Verde & Black look to protect their home turf and remain perfect at home with in-state rival North Texas SC visiting Parmer Field at St. David’s Performance Center. Uttley has relied on first-team loanees Kipp Keller and goalkeeper Damian Las along with captain Joe Hafferty and David Rodríguez in the early stages of the season. Those four have played every minute of the first three contests for ATXFC II.

Wednesday’s matchup features two of the top three teams in passing percentage with ATXFC II ranking first (86.4) and North Texas SC third (85.6). North Texas SC suffered defeat in their home opener on Sunday, falling 1-4 to Whitecaps FC 2. North Texas SC did not concede a goal through the first two weeks of the season, playing both matches on the road.

Whitecaps FC 2 were able to break that streak on Sunday, scoring three goals in the first 18 minutes of play. André Luque netted the only goal for North Texas SC in last Sunday’s loss. The two sides will not face off again until the last match of the MLSNP regular season, as ATXFC II will travel up to North Texas on September 24.

Wednesday’s match will be the second of a three-game home stand in 10 days for the Verde & Black, which will conclude with a 6 p.m. CT match against St. Louis City SC 2 on Sunday, April 16.
