Austin FC II played to a high-scoring 3-3 draw with Portland Timbers 2 on Thursday night at Providence Park, earning a point on the road.
The Verde & Black jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening stages with a pair of goals by Micah Burton. Burton got on the end of passes from CJ Fodrey in the 2nd minute and Rubén Bonachera in the 10th to grant the visitors an early cushion.
However, Portland swung momentum in its favor before halftime, as Marvin Loría - who spends most of his time with the Timbers' MLS side - netted goals on either side of a Tega Ikoba strike.
Austin responded well to trailing at the break. Fodrey headed in a cross from Jimmy Farkarlun in the 59th minute to level the score once again. It was the winger's fourth goal of the season in just eight starts, tying him for the team lead.
Neither team found a winner in regulation, and Portland claimed the extra point on offer with a dramatic 8-7 win in the ensuing penalty shootout.
