Austin FC has announced that Colombian center back Jhohan Romaña, who became familiar to Austin FC fans following Paraguay’s Club Guaraní the past five months, has signed with the Club. For the full press release CLICK HERE.

Romaña, 22, is the third player associated with the Paraguayan club to sign with Austin FC since July. Rodney Redes became Austin FC’s first-ever signing on July 6 after developing at the Ascunsión-based club. Cecilio Domínguez, announced as Austin FC’s first Designated Player on August 24, was loaned to Club Guaraní for the remainder of 2020 after joining Austin FC.

The three players, who played together in CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores matches as well as Paraguayan Primera Division matches, will reunite in Austin in January as part of Austin FC’s growing squad.

“Jhohan is a dynamic and versatile defender who has demonstrated his abilities playing important national and continental competitions with Guaraní,” said Austin FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna. “At a young age, he is also a proven player who will contribute depth to the squad. We are pleased to welcome him ahead of our inaugural season.”

“2020 has been a difficult year in many aspects, but it has also been rewarding career wise,” Romaña said. “Joining Austin FC in 2021 means a new and positive step in my career as a professional football player and I look forward to giving my new Club my very best in every aspect.”

Romaña came to Guaraní in 2019 from Independiente Medellin, the Colombian club that brought him into the professional ranks in 2016. He was a regular in Guaraní’s backline this past season, making 18 appearances between September and December. He has 31 appearances in total with the club between league play and international club competition, 30 of them starts.

He featured recently in Club Guaraní’s Copa Libertadores, starting and playing the full match in each of Guaraní’s Round of 16 matches against Brazilian club Gremio, and started five of the first six group stage matches in Copa Libertadores. He scored the opening goal in Guaraní’s 3-1 win over Tigre on Oct. 1, heading in a Redes corner kick to open the scoring in a match that secured the Round of 16 berth for Guaraní.

He primarily plays center back, though he has also slotted in at right back for Guaraní.

Romaña, whose full name is Jhohan Sebastián Romaña Espitia, becomes the fourth defender into Austin FC’s ranks as the Club continues its roster build. The Club’s three other defenders, Julio Cascante, Nick Lima, and Ben Sweat, were all acquired via trade on Dec. 13 during MLS’s Half-Day Trade Window. Visit the Roster Tracker here.
