Austin FC Academy Announces New Staff Hires

New Technical Staff Join Austin FC Academy; Additions Arrive with Collective Experience from Atlético de Madrid, D.C. United, Minnesota United and Villareal CF

Austin, TX - Austin FC Academy, the developmental pathway for the most talented youth soccer players in Central Texas, has announced new staff members who will help to further establish Austin FC Academy expanding operations which recently unveiled U13, U14, and U15 rosters for the 2020-2021 season. The new Academy staffing appointments include Angel Rivillo, U14 Head Coach and scouting coordinator; Javier Cano, U15 Head Coach; Alex Olivares, Academy Strength and Conditioning Coach; Jonas Hunt, Austin FC Center of Excellence Coach; Chris Perez, Academy Operations and Scout; and Jose Pablo Covarrubias, Academy Coordinator & Video Analyst.

Junro Narita, who coached Austin FC’s inaugural U14 team during the ‘19-’20 season, returns as Head Coach of the U13 team for his second season with Austin FC Academy.

I look forward to seeing them help our players and our program develop,” commented Tyson Wahl, Austin FC Academy General Manager. “We have added a strong mix of high-quality contributors who bring talent, knowledge, and experience across local, MLS, and European clubs. Each new staff member will be essential components to achieving the ambitious goals Austin FC has set for our Academy teams. We are focused on creating the best environment for youth player development in MLS, and these new additions are committed to that objective.”

New Austin FC Academy U15 Head Coach Javier Cano, hailing from Spain, was most recently at D.C. United where he was the Academy U15 Head Coach for the ’18-’19 season, and the U19 Head Coach for the ’19-’20 season, as well as an Assistant Coach for D.C. United’s first team in both seasons. Cano’s previous experience includes his tenure with Villareal CF S.A.D Academy in Spain and the Slavik Praha U21 Academy team in the Czech Republic. Cano holds a UEFA A coaching license.

Originally from Venezuela, U14 Head Coach Angel Rivillo joins Austin FC Academy from his previous position at Minnesota United FC where he held the Head Coach position within Minnesota United’s Academy and also served as the Academy scouting coordinator, from 2018 to 2020. Rivillo will immediately begin coaching the Austin FC Academy ’20-’21 U14 squad, recently unveiled by the Club, as well as the scouting role he will conduct for Austin FC Academy.

Another Spanish national, Alex Olivares arrives as Austin FC Academy Strength and Conditioning coach after previously serving as Development Director of the FC Barça Academy in Austin. Olivares worked at Atlético de Madrid in Spain from 2017 – 2019 as a strength and conditioning coach for their U8, U12, U14, and U16 teams.

Jonas Hunt, an Austin resident for over eight years, and also originally from Spain was most recently with FC Barça Academy in Austin and becomes an Austin FC Center of Excellence Coach. Chris Perez, a central Texas resident who formerly played as a U.S. Soccer Development Academy player and is currently earning his law degree from University of Texas School of Law, will support Academy operations and scouting. Jose Pablo Covarrubias, a former St. Edwards University soccer player currently obtaining his Professional Masters in Football Business, joins as Academy Coordinator & Video Analyst.
